Suribachi is a Japanese Mortar which is a pottery bowl that has jagged grooves on the inside to efficiently grind and mash ingredients such as sesame seeds, herbs, and spices. It is also great for making a dipping sauce or a salad dressing.
Each jagged grooves are hand carved by a skilled craftsman.

As this mortar is aesthetically pleasing, once you’ve made your sauce, you can use it as a serving dish. The spouted lip (called katakuchi in Japanese) makes it easier to pour the contents.

It is handcrafted in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, which is the production centre of Mino using the technique that has been passed down since 1897.

Small and Medium size available.
